PORTRAITS IN THE DIASPORA

BY TIANDRA RAY

1. PROGRESS IN PERSPECTIVE

Magazine clippings of foliage, a smoky sky, and radiant patterns, plastic cling wrap, plastic pack rings from some soda cans, photographs (myself, a funny looking wild amaranth, a late summer rose)

2. REACHING FOR ROOTS, REACHING FOR SKY

Magazine clippings of solar panels, coral reefs, and a skyscraper, fall ginkgo leaves, a chewing-gum package, dried corn husks, photographs (myself threefold, my eye, a plant in El Yunque, Puerto Rico)

3. CONSUMABLE

The grocery store circular, dried red chilies, images of a sewage and oil spill, photographs (myself, a mask I crafted from a Goya can, some wire, and two plastic water bottles, Nuyorican-style bamboo earrings that spell “Dreaming of America”, shishito peppers from my garden, cut papaya from my uncle’s tree)
